General information about the project
Full name of the project: Independent Dialogues on Food Security and the Development of Food Systems.
Short name of the project: Dialogues on Food Security.
Project head: Tatiana Valerievna Avgusmanova, Head of the Sustainable Development Directorate.
Start and end dates of the project: from 2020 to the present.
Rationale for the project
The project is carried out under the UN Mandate received by the Assembly in 2020 to hold independent dialogues on food security and the development of food systems.
With this Mandate, the World Peoples Assembly has every opportunity to hold “independent dialogues”, involving its partners and respected experts from among the members of the Assembly from different countries who have professional competencies in various thematic fields.
The outcomes of the “independent dialogues” may be presented at international public venues and at major events of the Assembly.
The methodology for organising and conducting international “independent dialogues” and the stages of holding them are set out in the documents of the Secretariat of the UN Food Systems Summit.
Goal of the project
The “independent dialogues” are held in order to draw public attention to thematic issues of transforming the ways food is produced and consumed in the world and to a constructive discussion of ways to revitalise international sectoral cooperation in creating environmentally clean agricultural produce, raw materials and food.
Objectives of the project
- organising and holding international “independent dialogues” on topical thematic areas;
- organising and holding “inter-dialogue” international conferences, round tables and platforms on the subject of the project;
- inviting respected scientists, thematic speakers and opinion leaders of international standing to take part in the “independent dialogues”;
- disseminating the results of the international “independent dialogues” on the internet platform and social media of the Assembly, its partners and members.
Activities planned within the project
In the course of the project, events, international meetings and working sessions preceding the “independent dialogues” are held, and the topics are agreed with expert communities, covering:
- the need to protect and conserve the environment, including water bodies and resources;
- conservation of forests and biodiversity;
- preventing the loss of biodiversity and restoring it;
- increasing the environmental resilience of food systems to climate shocks;
- support for small and medium-sized enterprises in agriculture, forestry, water management, agro-industry and the processing industry;
- promoting relevant experience of environmental culture and education among the population of the countries of the world;
- helping vulnerable groups of the population to gain access to affordable healthy food and more;
- drawing attention to the threat of the disappearance of the traditional food systems of indigenous peoples and the need to support them.
Expected results of the project
After the preparatory activities organised by the Assembly during the calendar year, subsequent “independent dialogues” are held at major international venues, aimed at advancing the proposals already developed, discussing topical issues and taking decisions.
The formats of the international “independent dialogues” vary: inter-dialogue conferences, webinars, round tables, working meetings, public gatherings, informal meetings and others.
Each “independent dialogue” results in a resolution.
