Academician of the Cuban Academy of Sciences Fidel Antonio Castro-Smirnov was appointed Deputy Secretary General of the World Peoples Assembly on September 9, 2026.

— This is the First Deputy Secretary General of the World Peoples Assembly for Latin America, and he is from Cuba. Undoubtedly, this underlines the special importance of this country for the Assembly. Thanks to the participation of Fidel Antonio Castro-Smirnov, we will actively develop cooperation with all countries of the region, - said Andrei Belyaninov, Secretary General of the World Peoples Assembly.

Fidel Antonio Castro-Smirnov is encouraged by the new appointment and notes that he shares the values of the World Peoples Assembly.

— I am glad to become a part of an organization that now plays a huge role in the formation of a more just multipolar world. This is very relevant, very important, - he said, emphasizing the merit of Andrei Belyaninov.

In his new position, Fidel Antonio Castro-Smirnov will, in particular, organize a Forum of Public Diplomacy in Cuba with the participation of the Cuban Institute of International Relations.

— Now it will be in great demand. Due to the blockade, the situation in the country is very difficult, primarily the Cuban civilian population suffers — children and the sick. There are simply not enough medicines, electricity in hospitals, and gasoline to refuel an ambulance, - he said.

Fidel Antonio Castro-Smirnov especially thanked the World Peoples Assembly for their active participation in the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Fidel Castro Ruz in Havana.

— In parallel, the possibility of concluding a cooperation agreement with the International Association of Physicians, which has its headquarters in Chile, is being explored. The organization includes representatives from more than 120 countries, - added Nikita Anisimov, Adviser to the Secretary General of the World Peoples Assembly, Director General of the Center for International Humanitarian Studies and Promotion of Public Diplomacy "Multipolar World".

Since April 2026, Fidel Antonio Castro-Smirnov has been actively participating in the events of the World Peoples Assembly, including the World Public Summits in Latin America and Africa.

Fidel Antonio Castro-Smirnov has, among other things, Soviet roots:

— My father, Fidel Castro's son, studied in the Soviet Union for 10 years. He also married my mother there, a Soviet woman who was born on May 9, 1945, - he told a TASS correspondent.
