In the Name of Friendship and Strength of Spirit: A Book on Sports of the Peoples of Bashkortostan Has Been Published
The book "Sport in the Republic of Bashkortostan" about the development of national and classical sports in a multinational region was published on the initiative of the Representative Office of the World Peoples Assembly in Ufa in July 2026. The book describes how physical education has become an important part of the cultural code of the Republic and a tool for strengthening interethnic harmony.
Authors review in detail traditional games and competitions that have existed on the land of Bashkortostan for centuries: horse racing, belt wrestling, archery and other disciplines rooted in the everyday life of the peoples of the region. Special attention is paid to the team game "ylak" and the duel of the “Auzarysh” riders, which turned from folk amusements into elements of official tournaments and became the hallmark of the region.
A separate section is devoted to the national sports of Bashkirs, Tatars, Udmurts, Mari, Mordvins and Chuvash, as well as how they coexist with the traditional sports of the "big" Russian sports. The book traces the introduction of folk practices into the all-Russian sports system, from mass competitions to the training of professional athletes.
A special place in the book is occupied by the analysis of the transformation of ancient competitions into modern sports: it explores what elements of traditional games have been preserved in the rules and how these disciplines affect the upbringing of young people. Through specific examples, it is shown how national tournaments become a platform for dialogue between cultures and a tool for the development of tourism and a regional brand.
The publication of the book received the support of the Republic's leadership. The head of Bashkiria, Radiy Khabirov, emphasized its importance for the region.:
— Such books help to see how sport unites people, preserves our cultural memory and works for the future of the Republic. The development of mass sports and attentive attitude to national sports is an important part of the state policy in physical culture and youth education.
In the digital age, publishing projects dedicated to regional history and culture become an important channel for preserving meanings and cultural codes. The Representative Office of the World Peoples Assembly in the Republic of Bashkortostan (Russia), on whose initiative the book "Sport in the Republic of Bashkortostan" was published, conducts consistent publishing work on the traditions and potential of the region through thematic series.
Notable series include the "Cuisines of the Peoples of Bashkortostan" series, publications on tourism and entrepreneurship, travel guides and reviews for guides, which are used by professionals in the hospitality industry. Against this background, the book "Sport in the Republic of Bashkortostan" occupies a special place as a comprehensive study of national sports and their evolution from traditional competitions to modern disciplines.
The publication is aimed at a wide range of readers: from specialists and coaches to young athletes and anyone interested in the history of the region and the culture of the peoples of Bashkiria. The book can be used as an auxiliary material for educational programs, projects in the field of intercultural dialogue and initiatives for the development of mass sports.
